New cd and a rumor!!!

I just got the new Steve Smith and Buddy's Buddies "Very Live at Ronnie Scotts" and will say this much, that is some nasty stuff!

Smith plays one of the most wicked solos I have ever heard him play on track two (Nutville). A must have in my opinion!


Now, onto the rumor. I heard from a reliable source that when the Burning for Buddy cd's came out in '94 that Vinnie had done a track or two,but obviously they were not released on 1 or 2. I heard that they might be releasing vol.3 and Vinnie might be on there.

Now, I know he was gigging w/Sting at the time and he may not have or had the time to do it. But,then again, he did record the Cavemen cd in 5hrs!!!

Neil said many times that he wanted Vinnie on the album but he didn't have time to do it so I doubt this rumour.

Would've been cool though!

I still don't think Steve Smith gets the props he deserves as one of the masters today, maybe because he's embraced the Buddy/Freddie style, that's not as in vogue today. I watch his DVD alot, and he's just
a master of the kit.

I'm looking forward to getting the CD.

Yes the Live at Ronnie Scotts and the new Quartet cd with Mike Zilber are outstanding discs.

Stv has long been a fav of mine AW, as of a couple of yrs. into my starting to play the kit... he actually stole the crown from Peart by a longshot when i heard him on Vital Info's 1st ['83], & again on Tony MacAlpine's EOI ['85] & VI's 2nd release...
Nice to hear that Neil wanted VC on the 1st BFB [it was way cool of him to produce that album, & assemble that list of players that he obviously respects, & for good reason]... too bad VC couldn't be on the 1st 1 [& i hope the rumors are right & Derek's not!] [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Absolutely. I was a Neil fiend up through Power Windows, in '86(I'm actually listening to Vapor Trails right now. I still like his playing). By fiend, I mean everyday after school, go down into the basement, and memorize/play along with everysong on every album from Fly By Night, up through Power Windows. Then in '86, there was a drum clinic by some guy who was the old drummer for Journey, and had some "jazz" band called Vital Information. I walked into the banquet hall, saw this GORGEOUS set of Sonor Signatures, (".. only 6 pieces? He played more with Journey.." I remember thinking) and all of a sudden this short, balding guy comes out to sound check the drums, and shows off some rudiments around the toms like nothing I'd never seen or heard before. I was hooked. The clinic was amazing, and thus my transformation from Neil freak, and into the jazz world was complete. I began checking out the Vital Info stuff, (this was right after Global Beat came out) and soon also discovered Vinnie with Frank, Husband/Wackerman with Holdsworth, and never looked back as far as my playing goes.

I actually saw Rush last July 4th, and enjoyed watching Neil for old times sake, but noticed the amount of un-necessary motion in his playing. (He really worked his ass off to get up to those toms,
even with his "Freddie-ized" set up). What would have REALLY impressed me is if he played Tom Sawyer with traditional grip!.
